When the thunder clouds formed, the bottom of thunder clouds will have a lot
of negative charge, generally at a strength of 7 to 15 kV. There is a strong
magnetic field between the negative charge of thunder clouds and ground. The
positive charge of ground will be released through the needlepoint of lighting
arrester. The lightning arrester constantly controls/absorb the energy, to some
extent, by releasing the positive charge into aerosphere and neutralizes the
negative charge of clouds. This protects all the equipment's which fall under the
safe range of the lightning arrester.
In the event of negative charge accumulation beyond the neutralizing capability
of the arrester, the lightning falls on the Arrester, which directly discharged to
the earth through the conductors connected to the lighting arrester.
This provides a safe protective range around the lightning arrester, reduce the
risk and damage that the lightning may cause to the crane parts and human
injuries.
